Vertically Challenged!!?

A couple years ago, the phrase ‘vertically challenged’ was used to describe someone or something that was, well…short. And while I haven’t heard this phrase for quite sometime, it does explain very well what others describe, in prayer, as ‘prayers bouncing off the ceiling.’ Do you feel like when you prayer your prayers just evaporate into the heavenly stratosphere? Well, recently in my study with prayer. I came across some texts that might help each of us to better align ourselves in prayer.

Will we pray in Heaven?

This question recently came to mind as I was preparing to speak at a Christian church. Will we pray in heaven? Its an interesting question. And one I didn’t have an immediate answer to. I had to do a bit of digging in God’s word to find out the answer. I hope that the answer surprises you as much as it did me! Continue reading

The God of All Comfort

1 Corinthians 1:3-5 says this, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.” (NKJV) Recently, I have seen some friends of mine go through some disheartening circumstances. And, well, honestly I don’t know what to say to them. I don’t know how help their situation. I don’t know how to comfort them.  But I am reminded by the verse above that God is a God of comfort. And I am realizing that God can do what I cannot do. He can be a comforter.  Let me ask you a question: Do you pray that God would comfort others, or that God would be a comforter to yourself and others? Continue reading

Guidance

First, we must recognize we cannot guide ourselves—our sinful disorientation points us in the wrong direction. Divine omniscience, wisdom, and guidance is needed to successfully navigate life’s journey along the Narrow Way:

  • Proverbs 14:12 [& 16:25]—There is a way which [that] seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
  • Jeremiah 10:23-24—O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
  • Jeremiah 33:3—Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
  • Proverbs 9:10-11—The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me [wisdom] thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
  • Proverbs 3:5-7—Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

“Plans for the Future”

Many are unable to make definite plans for the future. Their life is unsettled. They cannot discern the outcome of affairs, and this often fills them with anxiety and unrest. Let us remember that the life of God’s children in this world is a pilgrim life. We have not wisdom to plan our own lives. It is not for us to shape our future. “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:8.

Christ in His life on earth made no plans for Himself. He accepted God’s plans for Him, and day by day the Father unfolded His plans. So should we depend upon God, that our lives may be the simple outworking of His will. As we commit our ways to Him, He will direct our steps.

Too many, in planning for a brilliant future, make an utter failure. Let God plan for you. As a little child, trust to the guidance of Him who will “keep the feet of His saints.” 1 Samuel 2:9. God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as co-workers with Him.

Hope for God’s Remnant Church (represented as a woman)

Isaiah 54:1-17

Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord. [Compare with Babylon’s many daughters!] Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God. For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. 10 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. 11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. 12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. 13 And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. 14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. 15 Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. 16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. 17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.

Hope for God’s Remnant Church (often represented as Zion/Jerusalem/daughter of Zion)

Isaiah 62:1-3, 11-12

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah [Delight], and thy land Beulah [Sought After and Married]: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

Revelation 22:14—Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Isaiah 65:17-19, 21-25

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. . . . And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer, and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.

Isaiah 66:21-23

And I will also take of them [referring to the servants of God / inhabitants of Jerusalem and those who “love her, rejoice for joy with her,” and that “mourn for her”—Isa. 66:10] for priests and for Levites, saith the LORD. For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Supplying wants

  • Matthew 7:7-8—Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
  • 1 John 5:14-15—And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us: And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.
  • Psalm 84:11-12—For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
  • Psalm 37:4—Delight thyself also in the Lord: and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
    • In order to delight ourselves in God’s presence, we must know Him. When we know Him, this will manifest in love for Him. Our love for Him will also be manifested in our love for others. Love is selflessness—this is the character of God. If His presence is with us (which happens if we are truly in His presence), His Spirit will dwell in our hearts. If this is the case, then the desires of our heart will be God’s desires as well. And if God desires it—surely we will receive the desires of our Spirit-filled heart.
  • John 15:7—If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will [desire], and it shall be done unto you.
    • If God does not dwell in our hearts and sanctify our desires, there is the very real possibility that what we ask of God will not be received. As James 4:3 states, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” If we ask for purely selfish reasons, God will most likely ignore our request unless He sees that greater good can come out of it—even if it means us having to learn a lesson the hard way.

P.S. (Bonus!)

Several Prayer Promises from the Spirit of Prophecy (Ellen G. White):

  • “It is a part of God’s plan to grant us, in answer to the prayer of faith, that which He would not bestow did we not thus ask” (The Great Controversy, 525).
  • “Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed; but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to the sanctuary where Jesus ministers and He will present it to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of His own perfection.” (The Desire of Ages, 667).
  • “We do not value the power and efficacy of prayer as we should. Prayer and faith will do what no power on earth can accomplish” (Ministry of Healing, 509).
  • “Ministering angels are waiting about the throne to instantly obey the mandate of Jesus Christ to answer every prayer offered in earnest, living faith” (Selected Messages, 2, 377).

This is not a complete list, so if you have a promise you would like to see included, let me know in the comments section below!

Maybe you’ve asked God to vindicate you and bring justice on your enemies, but justice never came. Why? Why do our prayers go unanswered? Continue reading
